I'd like to set "newer first" in the query & retrieve panel.
my preference is to have new studies on top of the list and older ones at the bottom
other user may prefer the opposite...
so why not put this as a customizable preference?
if it's already possible, please tell me how to tweak the program.

Well, you can sort the list by clicking on the respective header.
